Founder of International Development Enterprises and expert on sustainable economic development, Mr. Polak, in his new book, Out of Poverty, tells why mainstream poverty eradication programs have fallen so sadly short and how he and his organization developed an alternative approach that has already succeeded in lifting 17 million people out of poverty.

Blue Horizons – UCSB Summer Program for Environmental Media
Using Media to Communicate Vital Stories of the Global Ocean
June 23 – August 22, 2008
This 9-week summer program brings together students interested in digital media production and environmental studies to learn about important issues of the global ocean from a local, California perspective. A coordinated series of interdisciplinary courses and related activities introduces students to scriptwriting; media portrayals of the environment; the biological, socio-economic, and political aspects of marine conservation; and the latest innovations in environmental filmmaking.
This Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines, but the criteria for acceptance include a demonstrated preparation in media or biological sciences. Screening will begin April 11, 2008; applications received after that date will be considered on a space-available basis. This is an opportunity to get involved in the rapidly growing green movement with a site positioned to transform the way people make lifestyle decisions. Interns will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working directly with the three founders who have over 30 years combined internet and marketing experience at leading content and web portals.
Responsibilities will include creating new site offerings, writing content and developing online and offline marketing programs. Projects may allow interns to continue to work part-time into the following school year and continue to be a part of ECOMII as it grows.
Compensation: $4,000 from June 16th - August 22nd (flexible)

Coastal Erosion Intertidal Ecology Internship – Oregon State University
Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO)

The marine ecology research focuses include ecological impacts of coastal erosion, mussel and barnacle larval recruitment and settlement, species interactions projects, and community ecology. The lab work for this internship will include counting samples at a stereo microscope. The fieldwork activities will involve hiking to field sites, climbing on coastal cliffs with heavy equipment and working on rocky exposed shores. The intern must be willing to work early mornings or late nights, some weekends, and some overnight stays at field sites.
