The students, faculty, staff, and administration of Brown University would like to extend a cordial invitation to the "Brown is Green 2008: Strategies for Shaping a Sustainable Future" conference. The conference is intended to highlight the increasing intersection of disciplines around sustainability and climate change, and to look at the new politics and ways of thinking that are arising with this issue.
Among the renowned scientists, policymakers, designers, community leaders, activists, artists, and students who will be taking part in this conference, we would like to draw your attention to the presence of Treasurer Caprio, Governor Carcieri, Mayor Cicilline, Senator Whitehouse, Ira Magaziner of the Clinton Foundation and the administration of President Clinton, renowned green architect John Picard, and Stephen Schneider, a lead climate scientist of the Nobel laureate UN FCC.

Laboratory Manager/Research Technician
Marine Fisheries Ecology, Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory
St. Teresa, Florida
The lab manager will work collaboratively on multiple field, laboratory, and data synthesis projects related to marine fisheries ecology. Projects include hypoxia effects on upper trophic levels in estuarine and offshore ecosystems, predator-prey interactions in estuarine environments, and movement/habitat use of juvenile estuarine and
nearshore fishes. The successful candidate will also contribute to the analysis of long-term fishery datasets in support of these projects as well as conference presentations and manuscript preparation.
Must hold a Masters degree or B.S. degree and appropriate work experience in ecology, fisheries, or another aspect of environmental science. Experience working from research vessels and small boats using standard fisheries sampling and processing techniques is preferred. Facility with data analysis software, GIS, and/or database management is strongly desired. Start date is flexible but expected by summer 2008. Salary range is $27,000 to 34,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Ecosystem Responses to Water Availability
Osvaldo Sala's Laboratory
The Sala lab has an opening for two undergraduate students to work on a manipulative experiment in the Chihuahuan desert (New Mexico). The study, "Responses of aboveground primary production to changes in water availability: understanding the meristem density limitation," looks at the effects of precipitation variability on net primary production. The project addresses several ecosystem processes and species interactions, such as aboveground net primary production, nutrient cycling, plant physiology and nutrient limitation.
Preference will be given to students interested in carrying out a senior thesis project.
This is a 6-week position (to be arranged between July and September), with travel and board covered. Stipend $350/wk Application deadline: April 30th.

Alliance for Healthy Homes

The Alliance for Healthy Homes is a national, nonprofit, public interest organization working to prevent and eliminate hazards in our homes that can harm the health of children, families, and other residents. The Alliance advocates for policy solutions and builds community capacity to achieve the prevention and elimination of such hazards. To reach its goals, the Alliance works closely with policy makers; community-based organizations; the housing industry; researchers; government agencies at the local, state, and federal level; and other stakeholders.
The Alliance is seeking an intern to perform research, summarize information, write policy briefings, make contacts to state and local agencies, national and local non-profits and community based organizations to obtain information and promote involvement in the Alliance's activities, and assist in updating the content of the Alliance's website and contact database. The position will offer $8 to 10 per hour (no benefits) depending upon education level and experience, working full time or near full time at the Alliance's office near the U.S. Capitol. Start and end dates are negotiable.

Campus Sustainability Fellow

The Campus Sustainability Fellow will continue to develop the School's sustainability program, which aims to:
- Raise environmental awareness among students, faculty, and staff;
- Integrate sustainability practices into all aspects of school life and operations; and
- Reduce The Hill School's environmental impacts.
Ideally the successful candidate will have: a bachelor's degree in environmental studies, science, management, conservation, or related field; knowledge of sustainability issues and best practices; commitment to institutional and societal sustainability; ability to develop relationships and collaborate with people throughout a school community; excellent organizational, analytical, and planning skills; strong writing skills; and the ability to work independently. Experience as an intern in a college campus sustainability office strongly preferred; interest in working in a boarding school environment strongly preferred. Experience with fundraising/grant writing a plus.

Oregon Hypoxia Outreach Internship position at Oregon State University
Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO)
Applications Due April 28, 2008
We are looking an enthusiastic individual to assist in hypoxia outreach, lab and field research. The focus of the position will be on education and outreach on hypoxia off the coast of Oregon, including working with media, community groups and scientists. This position involves primarily office work, with both lab and field work included as time permits. The fieldwork activities will involve long day trips on the R/V Elakha. The lab work will include assisting with analyses of ocean chemistry samples, preparing for research cruise logistics and reviewing video footage from submersible-based surveys of hypoxia affected habitats.
